Quirky Musical Dramedy

Shows that fall under the quirky-musical-dramedy genre are usually ones that have a unique premise which permits singing and dancing as a normal fit in the realm of the show’s universe. The jokes on quirky-musical-dramedies are typically silly and awkward. However, most of these shows have well written storylines which add a sense of drama to the mix. The themes and locations vary, but the genre usually centers around characters who are trying to sing their way to an ultimate goal. Many quirky comedies such as Scrubs, Psych and That 70’s Show have featured musical episodes which fall into the quirky-musical-dramedy category. Shows of this kind are typically made by musical people who have a background in theatre such as Rachel Bloom, creator and star of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.

The show’s silly premise about a successful lawyer ditching her life in New York to stalk an ex-boyfriend she met at summer camp as a teenager makes it nothing short of a quirky dramedy. The musical numbers incorporated into each episode add to the “adorkable” charm.

The romantic teen trilogy follows Troy and Gabriella as they battle their way to become the lead in the school musical. As a TV movie featured on Disney Channel, the love story is dramatic but the humor has a silly, quirky charm.
